Who said it first?

Many times quotes get use for so long that no one knows where it came from. A blog called Seed4Life brought this to my attention.

I don’t know if Clemens coined the quote that became the title of the post that I read or if he just used it, but her is the story that I read once a long time ago.

I believe the quote was originally from Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain. He was asked by a reporter / editor named Joseph Randolph Hearst, how he handled people criticizing Tom Sawyer. Clemens remarked that “the story was never written for children and those parents who feel the Tom Sawyer was not a good rolemodle for children must be reminded of their own childhoods, no young man I encourage them to remember that everyone who points a finger at me has three more condeming them” (1870).
